HRV took part in the financing of the development of a 28,500 square foot expansion of an existing 41,000 square foot foodbank facility in Tallahassee, FL, to increase food distribution to the surrounding Calhoun, Columbia, Dixie, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Hamilton, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Suwannee, Taylor, Wakulla counties.
Second Harvest of the Big Bend was founded in 1982 and first focused on collecting and distributing perishable food. An affiliate of the nationwide Feeding America food bank network, Second Harvest’s service area consists of an expansive, sixteen-county region in the central Florida Panhandle. The organization works with a network of 135 nonprofit partners, including homeless shelters, churches, schools, senior centers and food pantries.
Second Harvest of the Big Bend is a critical community asset located in a severely distressed Census Tract. Second Harvest of the Big Bend is advantageously placed to respond to the surge in need they are currently experiencing. They operate from their own facility on a twelve-acre campus able to accommodate the scale of expansion required.
The total investment of $12.7 million provided for land acquisition and construction to allow the facility to meet increased demands. Second Harvest of the Big Bend’s expansion will create 6 new full-time jobs, in addition retaining its 50 current employees.
